Janmashtami – The Story of Birth of Lord Krishna

India is a land of rich diversity, marked by a multitude of festivals celebrated throughout the year. Among these, Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Gokulashtami, stands out for its profound significance.

The Story Behind the Festival

Shree Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev, but was raised by Yashoda and Nanda in the town of Vrindavan. This festival is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha, the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapad. According to legend, Krishna was born in a prison cell in Mathura, where his life was under threat from his tyrannical uncle, Kansa. Kansa had been warned by a prophecy that one of Devaki’s children would be his downfall. To prevent this, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudev, determined to kill their offspring. However, to protect Krishna, Vasudev managed to transport him across the turbulent Yamuna River to Vrindavan, where Krishna was raised by Yashoda and Nanda.

How the Festival is Celebrated?

Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated at midnight, symbolizing the time of Krishna’s birth. Devotees observe a fast to express their devotion and gratitude. A popular tradition involves recreating Krishna’s love for butter (makhan) by hanging an earthen pot filled with butter high above the ground. Participants form human pyramids to reach and break the pot, symbolizing Krishna’s playful nature and his love for butter.

Globally, ISKCON temples hold grand Janmashtami celebrations. These events are marked by elaborate decorations, fragrant flowers, continuous kirtans and chanting, and performances of Rasleelas, dramatizing various episodes from Krishna’s life. The festival is also joyously celebrated in homes across India.

Shri Krishna, the divine figure who dispels darkness and illuminates the hearts of his followers, serves as a guide towards a life filled with joy, hope, and confidence.

Janmashtami exemplifies the spirit of unity in diversity, bringing people together and promoting peace, love, and harmony across India and beyond.
