For the first time in Nepal’s history, the people’s 65-year aspiration for a constitution through elected representatives was realized on Asoj 3, 2072 BS, when President Ram Baran Yadav signed the “Constitution of Nepal 2072.” Today marks National Constitution Day, a day to celebrate this significant achievement, born from the contributions and sacrifices of countless Nepalis. The 2072 Constitution transformed Nepal from a constitutional monarchy to a federal republic, replacing the interim constitution and paving the way for law and republican governance.

This year’s Constitution Day occurs amid political changes, as the Federal Republic of Nepal faces challenges and shifts in governance following elections at all levels. The current coalition government has emerged amid political tensions, raising questions about the constitutional order and democracy.

The constitution has faced obstacles but also significant milestones, such as ensuring justice for victims like Nirmala Pant and tackling corruption. After the first Constituent Assembly’s failure to draft a constitution on time, the second Assembly played a crucial role in enacting the 2072 Constitution, which established seven provinces and promoted federalism.

The constitution advances gender equality, allowing equal inheritance rights and recognizing diverse gender identities, while maintaining Nepal as a secular state. It affirms Nepal’s sovereignty and independence, emphasizing that no citizen should face discrimination based on gender, religion, caste, or any other identity.

The 2072 Constitution aims to end all forms of oppression from the previous feudal system, promoting unity and harmony among diverse communities and ensuring social justice. Despite various challenges, it was adopted with overwhelming support, a rare achievement in global history.

As Nepal moves forward, may the constitution foster development, inclusivity, and a shared national identity. Let there be rule of law and justice for all, as we embrace our collective identity as Nepalis.

Indra Jatra: Relevance, History, and Traditions.

Kathmandu, a city steeped in history, is often considered a prehistoric gem. The origins of the sacred Pashupatinath region remain unrecorded in scriptures or inscriptions, yet the city’s rich culture, civilization, and heritage have become invaluable assets to the world. Long before many developed nations emerged, Kathmandu established foundations of social development through its monasteries, temples, and a commitment to justice and equality.

The essence of civilization and peace permeates Kathmandu, which is not only a city of gods and temples but also a vibrant hub of festivals and diverse ancient cultures. One of its most significant celebrations is Indra Jatra, known as ‘Yenya Poonhi’ in Nepali. This festival commemorates a legend in which Lord Indra descended to Kathmandu in human form to steal flowers for his mother, Vasundhara Devi. After stealing without permission, he was captured by the gardeners, leading his mother to come to Kathmandu and negotiate his release.

During Indra Jatra, idols of the tied Indra are displayed at various locations, and the festival’s main event involves raising a lingo (flag) and organizing a rath yatra in a festive atmosphere. A special ritual goat is prepared, and its first leaf is used to create the lingo, known as ‘Yonsi,’ which is then placed before the idol of Kal Bhairav in Hanuman Dhoka.

The festival has its roots in the tenth century under King Gunakamdev, while the Kumari Jatra began in the mid-eighteenth century. It exemplifies the harmonious relationship between the Buddhist and Hindu Newa communities, celebrated with joy over eight days through various cultural events.

Three days after the lingo is raised, the living goddesses Kumari, Ganesh, and Akash Bhairav participate in a rath yatra. Traditional customs include staying awake all night at Indradaha, followed by bathing the next day.

On Yanlathwa Chaturdashi, the living deities are paraded through the old city, and families of the deceased scatter sacred offerings. Indra Jatra is celebrated by all of Kathmandu and Nepal, attracting dignitaries and reinforcing centuries-old traditions. Despite the challenges faced by temples and monasteries post-earthquake, the spirit of celebration continues to thrive.

Unity is essential for the preservation of these cultural heritages. May Indra’s blessings foster abundant crops and peace in everyone’s hearts. Best wishes to all Nepalis during Indra Jatra!

Ananta Chaturdashi

According to religious beliefs, when the Pandavas lost everything in gambling, they endured a difficult life in the forest with Draupadi. In their time of despair, Lord Krishna advised Yudhisthira to observe a fast on this day. The five Pandavas followed this guidance on Ananta Chaturdashi, and as a result, they were liberated from their suffering.

Today is a day to worship and honor Lord Anantnath (Lord Vishnu) through reverent fasting. Ananta Chaturdashi occurs on the 14th day of the waxing moon in Bhadra.

ॐ अनन्ताय नमः

Worship Method for Ananta Chaturdashi

On this day, begin with a cleansing bath and prepare for worship with a pure mind. First, install a sacred urn and place the Ashta Dal (eight leaves) in it, establishing the eternal deity of Kush. Then, with a sincere heart, worship Lord Anantnath by placing an infinite sutra with fourteen knots before the urn. It is especially auspicious to perform this worship during the day.

Best wishes to all!
